ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

To help inspire this change, South of Scotland Enterprise has partnered with Fuel Change to ensure that local businesses fully benefit from the transition to Net Zero. Together, we aim to do this through engaging the skills and talent of the Next Generation within the region.

Building upon the success of the Fuel Change Challenge methodology, a range of sustainability focused challenges are currently being set by SOSE in collaboration with their clients and local businesses. As these challenges focus on the South of Scotland, they will aim to address some of the biggest issues this area faces in terms of decarbonisation.

The challenge aims to encourage the development of new, innovative, and net zero solutions. These solutions hold the potential to alleviate and address the problems being faced by many businesses, whilst also showcasing the South of Scotland as a leader of this change.

In addition to this, the SOSE Challenge provides an opportunity for businesses in the South of Scotland to network and collaborate, which will help to create a more integrated and connected workforce. It will also identify and develop young talent, providing the next generation of the South of Scotland with the opportunity for significant personal and career development.

THE APPROACH

We draw together teams of graduates and apprentices from various organisations and sectors to address these challenges. The teams are coached to think differently, try out new skills and get out of their comfort zone. We get them to realise their superpowers and consider how to best use them in their teams.

Throughout the programme, the Next Generation further enhance and develop new skills to demonstrate their talent in problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking and resilience. We give them the confidence to see that nothing is impossible and that there is hidden genius everywhere. We celebrate that despite being a small group of individuals, they can make a difference.

By the end of the programme, they recognise their ability to take credible action for themselves and their workplace.

HOW IT WORKS

Teams work through a series of three sprints, lasting around five to six months which requires 1-2 hours per week from each participant.

The Fuel Change core team run a series of structured sessions to guide and support the teams throughout Sprint 1 and 2 to develop skills and provide a base level of sustainability education.

Towards the end of Sprint 2, each team is assigned a dedicated mentor to help them refine their solution.

Sprint 3 culminates in a presentation to industry professionals with the prospect of future implementation of their solution.
